If you’re a small business with a local focus, getting on page 1 or page 2 shouldn’t be too difficult. What it boils down to is a few important maps, social networks and html tags. After completing some simple steps, with an hour or two of management each week, you’ll see results.

Mapping – If you’re a business with a location you should be on Google maps. Yahoo, Bing, MapQuest… they all will generate some traffic but if you’re pressed for time, Google maps(places) is a must. Verify your listing, add as many categories as you can, address, link, …special offers, make the information as complete as possible.

Social Networks – You see the icons on nearly every TV ad. You see those odd, square codes adorning print ads, beckoning you to scan them with your smartphone. Hashtags, likes, circles and foursquare… If you want to look professional, a social network location or two is a weighty consideration. HTML Code –  The <title> tag, besides your domain name, is the first thing considered. Short(shoot for 7 -9 words), descriptive summary of your business including your major money keywords and location. The next most important bit of html is the <meta description= tag and this will be the block of text that many search engines display under the “title” on their search returns pages. Write a bit more detailed description here and don’t forget to include your phone number.

Use html5 if possible and check your work at the validator. The less errors you have, the more search engine friendly your site will be. The error report given by the validator will point out missing alt attributes, titles and other things important to the web crawlers and site usability. Clean code is more conducive to faster page loads as well = better user experience.
