Publishing a new article is not the only way to improve a website. Sometimes the more valuable step is to connect pages that already exist.
New content can expand what a website knows. Thoughtful internal links can make that knowledge easier to find, understand, and use. The question is not whether websites should publish or link. It is which kind of work the existing information architecture needs next.
A Website Can Grow Through Connection

Important pages can only be found through search
A page may appear in an XML sitemap or search index while remaining difficult to reach through the website itself. If readers must already know the page exists before they can find it, the page may be structurally isolated.
Internal links provide visible routes into these pages. They also give crawlers additional pathways, although links alone do not guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking, or retrieval.
Articles repeatedly explain the same background material
Some repetition is helpful because each page should remain understandable in context. Excessive repetition, however, can signal that a foundational explanation deserves a stable home.
Instead of rebuilding the same detailed definition in several articles, a website can provide a concise explanation where needed and link to the fuller resource. This preserves local clarity while reducing unnecessary duplication.
Readers reach an answer but not the surrounding subject

2. Identify the page’s actual job
Write a short description of what the page helps a reader understand or accomplish. If its purpose cannot be stated clearly, the page may need revision before additional links are added.
3. Find meaningful neighbors
Look for existing pages that provide:
- necessary background;
- greater depth;
- a contrasting perspective;
- an implementation step;
- a relevant example;
- a definition; or
- a natural continuation.

4. Review links in both directions
If Page A helps readers understand Page B, consider whether Page B should also acknowledge Page A. Reciprocal links are not automatically necessary, but reviewing both directions often reveals missing pathways.
The wording and placement do not need to be symmetrical. Each page should link according to its own context.
5. Check whether the destination earns the link
Before linking, confirm that the destination still provides useful, accurate, and sufficiently complete information. Example: Expanding a Website or Connecting It?
Consider a mature website with separate articles about internal linking, navigation design, content neighborhoods, heading hierarchy, and AI retrieval systems.
The owner considers publishing another broad article about website structure. Before doing so, an editorial review finds that:
- the internal linking article does not point to the content neighborhood article;
- the navigation article does not distinguish global navigation from contextual links;
- the heading hierarchy article mentions structure without connecting to semantic HTML;
- the AI retrieval article has no path to the site’s information architecture resources; and
- several pages repeat short definitions that already have fuller explanations elsewhere.
Another broad article may add little. Updating the existing pages could produce a clearer result by exposing relationships that are already present but structurally quiet.
Now consider a different website. It has several technical articles that mention canonical URLs, but none explains what a canonical URL is, when it is used, or what it does not guarantee. In this situation, internal links cannot fill the gap because there is no adequate destination. A focused new article would strengthen the neighborhood and give existing mentions a useful place to point.
The same principle governs both cases: examine the knowledge system before choosing the publishing action.
Internal Relationships Also Support Retrieval
Clear internal relationships can help search engines and other retrieval systems encounter pages, interpret contextual associations, and recognize how information is distributed across a website. They can also improve the source material available to systems that retrieve passages rather than treating every page as an isolated unit.
These benefits should be described carefully. An internal link does not prove that two pages are authoritative, guarantee a ranking change, or ensure that an AI system will retrieve either page. Links are one signal within a larger structure that includes page content, headings, navigation, metadata, URL design, and technical accessibility.
The durable reason to create an internal link is that the relationship is real and useful. Retrieval systems may benefit from the same clarity that helps human readers.
