Understanding SEO Beyond “Limits”

There are a lot of charts and posts that try to define SEO using limits—how many words a page should have, how many links are “allowed,” how long a title should be.

The issue isn’t that these ideas are completely wrong. It’s that they’re often presented as fixed rules, when in reality they represent very different types of things.

Some are real technical constraints. Some are patterns that tend to work. Others are outdated simplifications that can quietly lead people in the wrong direction.

This breakdown separates those categories so you can see what actually matters—and what needs to be interpreted instead of followed.

 

1: HARD CONSTRAINTS

This section covers real technical constraints—things that exist because of how the web and search engines function, not because of best practices or opinion.

You’ll run into these more often on larger or more complex sites, but they apply everywhere.

Unlike guidelines, these are actual boundaries. They don’t change often, and they aren’t flexible in the same way.

  • Sitemap size — A sitemap is a file that lists the pages on your site to help search engines find and understand them. (~50MB uncompressed limit per file)
  • Sitemap URL count — The number of URLs you can include in a single sitemap file. (50,000 URLs per sitemap file)
  • Robots.txt size — The robots.txt file tells search engines what they can and cannot crawl on your site. (Has practical size limits depending on processing constraints)
  • URL length — The total length of a page’s URL. (There are practical limits across browsers, servers, and crawlers—very long URLs can break or be truncated)
  • HTTP status codes — These are responses from your server that tell browsers and search engines what happened when a page was requested (e.g., success, redirect, not found). (Must behave correctly—200, 301, 404, etc.)
  • Canonicalization — The process of telling search engines which version of a page is the “main” version when similar or duplicate pages exist. (Handled via rel=canonical and related signals)
  • Indexing directives — Instructions that tell search engines whether a page should be included in search results. (e.g., noindex, robots directives)
  • Crawl accessibility — Whether search engines can actually access and render your page and its resources. (Blocked files, missing JS/CSS, or rendering issues can prevent proper crawling)

These are engineering boundaries.

You don’t optimize them—you stay within them so the system can function correctly.

 

2: GUIDELINES

This section covers common SEO guidelines—patterns that are often observed in search results, but are not strict rules.

These exist to help approximate what tends to work, not to define hard limits. Most of them are based on averages, typical rendering behavior, or common structural patterns.

Used well, they provide direction. Used blindly, they create rigid and often unnecessary constraints.

  • Meta title length — The title shown in search results. (~50–70 characters is a common guideline, but this is based on pixel width, not character count. Narrow characters can allow longer titles to display fully, while wide characters can truncate earlier.)
  • Meta description length — The summary shown under the title in search results. (~150–160 characters is typical, but display varies by device and query.)
  • Header structure (H1, H2, etc.) — HTML elements used to organize content into sections. (These help define structure, but can also be used functionally—for example, H2s used as anchor targets to improve navigation within long pages.)
  • Internal link count — The number of links pointing to other pages within your site. (There is no fixed “correct” number—this depends on the size, purpose, and structure of the page.)
  • Anchor text — The clickable text used in a link. (Should describe the destination naturally, not force keywords.)
    • Example: <a href="/hair-care-tips">how to keep your hair healthy</a> vs <a href="/hair-care-tips">cheap shampoo buy now</a>
  • URL structure — The format of a page’s URL. (Short, readable, and descriptive is generally preferred, but exact structure varies by site type.)
  • Image alt text — Text describing an image for accessibility and search engines. (Should describe the image clearly—over-optimization can reduce clarity.)
    • Example: "smiling girl on beach with shiny blond hair" vs "buy shampoo online cheap best hair product"

These are reference points. They reflect how systems and users tend to behave—but they need to be interpreted in context.

 

3: OUTDATED OR MISLEADING HEURISTICS

This section covers ideas that were once used to simplify SEO, but can become misleading or counterproductive when treated as rules today.

Many of these came from earlier stages of search, when systems were less capable and required more direct signals. Over time, they were repeated, standardized, and turned into checklists.

The issue isn’t that these ideas are entirely wrong—it’s that they are often applied without context, leading to forced or unnatural outcomes.

  • Minimum word count — The idea that pages need a certain number of words (e.g., 300+) to rank. (In reality, the correct length depends on the purpose of the page. A simple definition or lookup page may only need a few sentences to fully satisfy intent.)
  • Keyword density — The idea that keywords should appear at a specific percentage within content. (In practice, natural language tends to produce the right distribution. Many experienced practitioners never measure this directly and instead focus on clarity and completeness.)
  • Exact match keyword placement — The belief that using the exact keyword phrase in specific locations is required. (Modern systems understand meaning and variation—writing naturally is typically more effective than forcing exact matches.)
  • “Optimal” number of backlinks — The idea that there is a target number of external links needed to rank. (Links are signals of trust and relevance, but their value comes from how they occur—not from hitting a specific count. Over-focusing on acquiring links can shift attention away from building pages that naturally earn them.)
  • Simplified page speed targets — The idea that pages are “good” if they load within a set time (e.g., 2–3 seconds). (In practice, faster is always better. A slower load time may be acceptable for complex pages, but simple pages should generally be much faster.)
  • Rigid click depth rules — The belief that all pages must be within a certain number of clicks from the homepage. (While structure matters, real-world performance often depends more on internal linking and discoverability than strict depth limits.)
  • SEO scoring systems — The idea that a page can be optimized by achieving a high score in a tool. (These systems reduce complex signals into simplified metrics, which can be useful for direction but can also lead to over-optimization if followed too literally.)

These are not rules to follow. They are simplified models that can become distortions when applied without understanding. Use them carefully—or not at all—depending on context.

Context beats limits every time.
